Roles and Responsibilities

  • Organizes periodic review of the hospital-wide infection control policies and updates them when new information and or directives are published
  • Provides direction to Nursing Supervisors and other unit or department directors in the formulation, review, and revision of policies and procedures for each department and formulates guidelines for the care of infected patients, contaminated equipment and/or environment
  • Coordinates post exposure prophylaxis activities involving hospital personnel after needle stick injury.
  • To perform variety of professional duties involved in the prevention and control of nosocomial infections
  • Conducts educational classes and helps in planning of the professional development of the staff nurses of the unit
  • Collects data on nosocomial infections from all hospital departments and maintain records for each case
  • Conducts continuous surveillance to detect the source of infection for prevention purposes
  • Takes culture swabs regularly from high risk areas to hospital laboratory, obtains the microbiology culture results from the hospital laboratory and reports findings to the HIC chair person, Administrator
  • Monitors the implementation of preventive measures, provides guidance to staff and counsels them as per the need
  • Participates and assists in the organization of regularly scheduled hospital Infection Control Committee meetings
  • Prepares monthly statistical data for presentation in the hospital infection control meetings
  • Participate in clinical audit programs and provide relevant results to area concerned and nursing management team
  • Makes rounds on all nursing units for the purpose of case finding, supervision of isolation practices and assisting in resolving problems and concerns of personnel and patients
  • Follows and investigates the incidence of nosocomial hospital infections, generates reports and forwards copy of the reports to the chair person of infection control committee and the Administrator
